I taught a class where a gal used different fabrics in her hidden wells quilt. It came out beautifully, but the design that you usually see was different. If you haved found fabrics you love, go for it. I had some problems understanding the reddawn.net sight, so after I made my first quilt, I wrote a tutorial on my blog.
