I am not much help because I give myself a cheater strip when planning a intricate border. A cheater strip is a plain border. I decide on how wide to make it between my quilt and the pieced border after laying it out. If I need a little more space I make the strip wider. A little less space, I trim it down. I wouldn't call it a cheater strip, I call it smart quiltmaking!! No matter what width the strip needs to be, if the border goes together nicely, the strip is right. Good figuring, not cheating.
