The 'usual' way this fabric was used was in big (8"-12") squares or rectangles stitched together at random for both sides of the quilt and tied at the intersections of the squares. Heavy as all get out and no need for batting.
As mentioned earlier, these wear like iron and are wonderful for outdoor use.
