barri1 this is how i cut my squares. hopefully you have a rotary cutter to use.

i cut 1.5" strips to start with:

i double the strips over so that i am cutting two at a time of each color i have laid out:

i stack my strips on top of each other so that i am cutting 6 strips at once. i cut off an end tip to even the strips up:

i take my ruler and measure out 1.5" square:

and then i cut my squares 6 sat a time:

you may find this method easier than cutting around a template with scissors. even with scraps i try to cut strips. if i am not able to do so, i stack up scraps 6 at a time and cut around my 1.5" template with a rotary cutter. good luck cutting.
