It amazes me what some people consider trash. I'm glad that your DS rescued your machine.
I have a hand crank 1932 Singer 99K. Lovely machine to sew with, the step-grand daughters loved to sew doll quilts with my machine. The 99 takes a standard 15x1 needle, found in JoAnn's and lots of other places. I mostly use Schmetz brand needles. For quilting fabric a #80/12 sharp or microtex needle.
