The SN on mine is in the inside of the needle/presser bar area when you swing open the door. I can't remember if it's on the door itself or on the inside. I don't know if they changed locations on these or not.
I found this info somewhere (can't remember where!) about dating Elna Supermatics:
It is common belief that to date early Elna machines the first digit in the serial number is the year of manufacture. However, this does not apply to the Elna 1 and I do not have enough data to make any meaningful comment on dating this machine. In dating the Elna Supermatic and later models it is only true up until 1959. From 1960 – 1963 the serial number began with a number 1 the second digit gave the manufacturing date. For example a serial number starting with a 12 is 1962. From late 1963 a letter was introduced at the start of the serial number as follows:
A - 1963 L - 1971 X - 1980 G - 1989
B - 1964 M - 1972 Y - 1981 H - 1990
C - 1965 N - 1973 Z - 1982 K - 1991
D - 1965/1966 P - 1974 A - 1983* L - 1992
E - 1066 R - 1975 B - 1984 M - 1993
F - 1967 S - 1976 C - 1985 N - 1994
G - 1968 T - 1977 D - 1986 P - 1995
H - 1969/1970 U - 1978 E - 1987
K - 1970/1971 V - 1979 F - 1988
From 1983* the system started again from A
