I just finished a queen rag quilt .... 132 squares. I used 9 inch squares for the top/back and 7 1/2 inch for the batting.
What I did, was cut a bunch of the top squares/batting/back squares ~ then put them together and sew the X (in fact, I did a double X on them) .... and sewed a bunch. Then switched back and forth between the cutting and sewing and I didn't get so tired of doing one thing.
I so love this rag quilt!!! I have it on our bed now and it makes me happy every morning when I get up and see all these bright colors ... and the weight is good for summer too!!!
