This is kind of where I stand, too. Animals should be kept warm and comfortable but they don't care if it's a heirloom quilt or a new blanket. People do care. I applaud her for rescuing a beautiful quilt that someone worked many hours making. I think families often donate inherited things they don't personally want and because they don't know or appreciate the value of handmade items. But the items are treasures just the same.
I also do agree in burying a beloved animal in a quilt if that's the owner's decision. But that's an individual choice of a particular family.
