To me the issue is not how close the batting company says. It is whether there is sufficient quilting to give an evenness in the quilting over the top without leaving unquilted areas.
Holice - You have articulated what I believe I am recognizing but not really wanting to admit! I'll attach a couple of pictures. The borders have a fairly close serpentine stitch going around the quilt (approximately a foot's width between columns and then the sashing with the circles. The blocks look a little unbalanced. But I don't think a stipple is the answer. Maybe a small but not dense pebble.
