Depending on the stencil, I have made the design fit by elongating sections, or shortening sections. I often trace my quilting design onto examining table paper, and then adjust by tucking to shorten or cutting the design a bit to elongate. It is harder to "fudge" in the corners, much easier to do the adjustments on the sides of your quilt.
