To keep the thread catcher bag open I used the upper rim of the yogourt container. I do not have to worry about it collapsing.
Another way of keeping the catcher open is use that rigid plastic 'tape' you sometimes get round large parcels and boxes. Sometimes round bundles of papers and magazines too
