It's called the Japanese Puzzle block. AKA Pine Bark pattern.
It's one of my favorites.

Google those two names and you'll see a bunch of different techniques.
But there are some "cheater" methods out there that don't give quite the same effect.

The best instructions I ever saw were in a Quilter's Newsletter from the early '00's.

I can't find a picture of mine but I did it with batiks.
Which really wasn't the most brilliant thing to do.
Unless you're a really, really organized, neat worker.

I had a separate mat (I drew on the back) just for the JP.
I always planned on making more.
