I donot know what contact paper is. I had a border to do and a long thin border. I purchased some izal toilet paper ( it is very stiff not soft) and drew the pattern onto that plus a corner, then pinned on the quilt. I then machined over. The lines. This was very easy and did a very good job. Could not use twice but. Paper was cheap anyway.
Not tried it for larger areas only width of a toilet roll
