I am going to stitch in the ditch but what would you do for the insert? I don't want to stitch across it. Do you think it would be ok to stitch in the ditch around the black border and leave the rest? Or would it bubble up when washed?
If you don't do anything in the cross stitch area it won't be stable like the rest of the quilt. The goal is to quilt all of the quilt evenly. I can see not wanting to quilt over the design, but I'd quilt as close as possible around it. Buy either using straight echo quilting to frame it, or FMQ stippling. I would use a light cotton thread (neutral around the design) and black for the SITD.
