When I was using cone thread I had a problem but then changed the needle to a 90/14 and it was fine after that. Thread does make a difference but sometimes its as simple as changing the needle to fix. I'm lucky to have a Viking because it adjust the tension itself so other than the cone I've never had an issue,and since it was an easy fix I don't have any issues.
