I remember in about 1948 or so, on the Yuma reservation, one of the Pimas died and it was the custom to
smash all his/her belongings. One white man came along and talked one saddened widow into giving
him money to put on the fire when they burnt the body. He then put a piece of white paper on it, but
some of the Indians were very well educated...when that paper burnt the man was ready to take off,
but was stopped and forced to "discuss" his actions. The money was recovered, and, unfortunately,
(to our minds) was thrown on the fire and burnt with its owner. The white man decided to leave town.
Dear old Jim Rainbow was a very smart man, deeply religious but true to his tribe's traditions. long
live the memory of Jim and his wife, Junie May, they were real good people. Rare good friends to have.
