I like using up my scrap squares with a 4x4 (16 squares) or 5x5 (25 squares) block, always including 3 black squares in each block.
I get , if I use 2 1/2" squares, an 8" or a 10" finished square. I sash with black 2 1/2 (cut) strips.
It's a very simple and easy to put together top and always looks good.
