Whatever appeals to you should be your guide. I don't like many of the "wonky" quilts, either. I was almost offended when I went to a quilt show years ago and there were "quilts" that looked thrown together, using non-traditional materials and techniques. They did not look neat and professional--just messy, in my opinion.
