Cool. What about going one further, and sewing half-hexagons in the center section? That would eliminate all the Y-seams I think. Or split the coloured half-hexies into a diamond and triangle, and you'd be able to make large diamonds from hexie + 2 triangles and center section wouldn't have any y-seams.
