We had a woman who left the Amish speak at our guild about Amish quilts. She told us that the 'humility' block is just a myth that got started somewhere. She said the Amish would NEVER be so conceited as to think they are more perfect than God and that they have to build a mistake into a quilt!! Plus, if you build in something that is wrong for the design, it's not a mistake, it's a design decision.
That is really odd... i used to live near and work with several Amish in PA....i was not a quilter then, and when i asked about seeing a backward or upside-down square in their quilt, was told that they did always put an "error" in the quilt, because only God is perfect. Maybe it's a regional thing?
