Besides chemical penetrating oils and heat, a proper set of hollow ground screwdrivers, such as those sold for gunsmithing go a long way to getting out stubborn screws.
I use my gunsmithing screwdriver set as much on sewing machine screws as I do guns.
Sets can be had for a reasonable price and they help keep the screw slots from being messed up.
