Warm Wishes is a good suggestion. Decide on the size you want to cut your focus fabric, figure out the widths of your strips from there to get the correct width of the alternating blocks and sew strips together then cut. I think a lap size could be assembled in one or two days. Then just do a simple SITD for quilting.
Another option would be a 9 patch variation.
For one block
Cut 1 - 8 1/2" square of focus fabric
Cut 4 - 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles
Cut 4 - 2 1/2" squares
This will make a 12 1/2" block, unfinished
It will work best if you alternate the rectangles and the 2 1/2" squares in half lights and half darks.
I'm assuming the print has a lot of different colors so you should be able to alternate the colors fairly easily.
PM me if you need more information
Good luck and I hope your friend does well in treatment.
