You could try it this way as well:
Cut your background and center segments at 3.5 sq."
Cut your snowballs for the star points at 2.5" sq.
Sew together and you'll have a 9.5" block which you can then trim down to the exact size you need.
Be sure to keep the center of your star in the center of the block as you trim.
