From what I have read and experienced first hand, there is a real marriage between stitch length, tension, and the speed in which you move the fabric, especially with curves. I had a similar problem at first, but I kept making sample quilt sandwiches on which to practice. Eventually, it got more comfortable. Also, I made sure I sued the same thread in both top and in the bobbin. FMQ is like a dance; where practice is the only way to really learn the steps.
