There are some festivities for 12th Night, which marks the beginning of Mardi Gras season. Usually it's an invite only ball and a costumed streetcar ride in the evening on St. Charles Ave. Www.nola.com would probably have some info on that. If you're in town then, it's worth doing. There are lots of B&Bs in the French Quarter and Marigny neighborhoods which would put you in the center of everything and give you a real sense of the flavor of the area. If you want to do some shopping outside of the French Quarter/Marigny area, head down Magazine street. About halfway to the zoo there is an amazing little shopping district full of quaint shops and restaurants.

Have fun and stay safe!
