It does fray as you can see in the picture I posted. The flannel does most of the fraying though. The quilt in the picture was washed once after completing and that is how much ragging it did. I have washed it a couple more times since I made it and it still plumps up a little more each time.
Fleece will curl but it doesn't fray.
And definately wash your flannel first to get the majority of the shrinkage out. I didn't quilt "X"s in the squares either.
