All of the above. A lot of my quilts are 'blender only' because I treat fabric as paint and I want my quilt design to stand out more than any individual fabric used to create it...from a distance and up close.

Versitility is also very important. If a blender 'blends' with only one other fabric or color, it may be gorgeous but it's use is limited. If it bridges two or more colors, values, or intensities, it is much more versitile and thus more useful to me. Color is perceived differently depending on the neighboring colors and that can be used to great advantage with blenders.
