Tesselated is when you have no "empty space" between a repeated figure or design. M. C. Escher did a lot of that kind of art, like with fish and birds in the same picture... the pieces or figures fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. There's some kind of math behind it. Anyway, those wonky pinwheels all fit together, and depending on the color treatment, can really trick the eye.
