It's a lovely star, and I think will look great as a top.
If you used a fat eighth for each of the center diamonds you could end up with a 50" or so square star block. That would give you a 9" wide diamond. Then a 2" strip (1-1/2" finished) and a 4" (3-1/2" finished) strip then the white background squares.
