I hadn't thought of contact paper. I know it can be amazingly durable - the previous owners of our previous house had used it to cover the the old Formica kitchen counters. We didn't get it changed out until we were getting ready to sell the house 12 years later (inertia - it's a wondering labor saving concept.)
