You could alternate them with another kind of block. My friend Cindi made a beautiful quilt that was a combination of 9-patch (in color) and hourglass (in neutrals) blocks.
Alex Anderson made one that had little appliqued flowers on every other block. It's beautiful.
I seem to have a thing for 9-patch blocks....
