I prefer the fusible and machine stitch with fancy stitches so that the whole applique becomes more than just an applique. To me, the aptly chosen fancy stitches make the applique look like embroidered cloth. It takes longer, more colors in the thread and great patience, but looks medieval and enhances everything. IMHO.
