I used to have this problem of the machine running without my help. But, my problem was my dog! He liked lying down by my feet and sometimes he would lay right on top of the pedal!
Glad you solved your problem - never would have thought of cleaning the pedal.
My cat did that just yesterday! She's a pest while I'm sewing, but she thinks she is helping.
