It depends on the applique I'm working on. So you have to decide for yourself. I use cotton all the time because I have a trillion spools of cotton and not to many spools of silk.
Totally agree with this. You can use any type of thread and any color you like. And I don't buy into the philosophy that polyester thread cuts fabrics. JMHO.
