If you have never done it and didn't know about it, then it is a new and wonderful thing. Doesn't matter if your grandma did it that way. I am so glad you learned something new.
This reminds me of my sister-in-law, she makes beautiful pieced quilts. She wanted to put on some letters for her new grandchild. She had no idea how to do that. We realized she had never done any applique.
