It has been said that it creates more seams in the binding and some are turned off by that. I think having more sections makes it easier to replacce as binding gets worn. Just un- sew it between two seams and replace that one section.
When doing quilts for shows I do use the longest bias strips I can so there are less seams.
I thinks it is all a matter of your needs at any time for any project.
