Lol, I just had to laugh at your post because I felt the same way a couple of months ago! I have only been quilting for about a year now, I dabbled in it a little in the past but nothing like now. I started out with a new Singer machine, I think it cost a couple hundred bucks at Walmart about 15 yrs ago. I didn't really sew that much, made both my babies a baby blanket with my moms help of course, other than that, nothing really. Well then about a year ago I decided I wanted to make myself a little lap quilt. My mom and I were at Joanne's and she was looking into the Viking Sapphire 875Q, well I thought she deserved one so I bought it for her that day. (We had went there to buy a few yards of material for my lap quilt). I bought my material, went home started on my lap quilt and decided that my old singer was a piece of crap and that I needed a new one like my moms. So I went back to Joanne's and bought another Viking Sapphire 875Q. I finished my lap quilt and started really getting into Quilting, buying fabric like the Moda warehouse was on fire and I had to buy it all! Crazy crazy addiction! Well then I started hearing about all these great other machines, so I told myself that I had to have another one so I bought a new Janome 7700. I quilted one quilt on that, and some how got looking at Berninas....needless to say I now have 3 new machines, I had to have the Bernina 820 QE. I love this machine the most out of the 3 new ones. I wish I would have never bought the Janome I guess because I love the bernina so much that's all I want to use. My Bernina kicks butt hands down!
So I guess all the advice that I can give you is to investigate and make sure that you buy what you want. I had a magazine (I forget which one it was cuz for some reason I think I have to have all those too) that listed about 20 different machines and their differences and their price range. Great magazine, I think that's what got me going on the bernina. But jsut do some research first! I am done buying machines now for awhile, I have found my new love! I kinda felt greedy at first too, so I know how your feeling even though your hubby and daughter are telling you to go for it you still kinda feel guilty. You know why you kinda feel guilty? Because MOMS don't normaly spend money on themselves, it's always for the kids or someone else, that's why. Look at all of your husbands tools! Those are expensive too! So this is your tool!
Just for a funny: I read something somewhere once, can't really remember all of it but it was something about finally getting to use a clean towel after you shower, something like 'A mom has waited 18 yrs to have a nice clean towel all to herself without feeling guilty about it'. What I gathered from it is a mom always grabs her baby's dirty towel, that really isn't that dirty, instead of getting a clean one, save those for the kids and DH, besides all that you do the laundry. Sounds kinda gross but I'll be honest and say I have done it before! (especially if its just for my hair)....lol.. Buy the machine if you want it.
