There is a line on the ruler that you put the seam line on, each line says what size block you will make, each size is a different width. If your strips are too wide, you get a funny notch out of the upcoming block or else have to do an extra cut to stay away from it.
Exactly what I did Judy. Three 5 inch strips cut WOF. The ruler I used is the Fons & Porter half and quarter ruler. I think (note to self) that in the future I would cut the strips perhaps a quarter inch larger in order to square up the blocks perfectly. Mine are a smidge off of perfect but sometimes bias is a good thing. BTW, how do you press your seams? I pressed mine open.
