ShiAnn, start with a 7" inch square of A/B. mark the diagonal and sew 1/4" inch away from that line, both sides of the line. Cut on the drawn line, Press open and then "sliver" trim the squares to 6-1/2". The 5" and other sizes you were seeing was where someone was using a special ruler. General rule of thumb is to add 1/2" to unfinished size of your first set of squares. No dumb questions by the way.
