I would make 4 log cabins for the foundation.
A fifth LC would be for the center heart.
Using a white square for the reverse applique heart shape, cut out the center opening after first stay-stitching on the heart line. This will be turned under in the reverse applique.
Then you can either machine stitch the heart square to the background, one at a time (stop 1/4 inch short so you can finish the seam) OR applique the center heart square to the foundation blocks, having sewn them together.
Either way, I'd then cut away the excess underneath.

There are lots of ways to make this block.
