I've noticed if my needle gets dull or if I've forgotten to change the needle from a 90/14 if I'm quilting back down to a 80/12 or 75/11 for piecing. I had a 90 in and changed it back to a 75 and the fabric eating stopped. I too use a leader piece right off too. The messy threads get bunched up on that not on my piece.
