Maybe you could take a piece of similar fabric and make a patch as suggested. After it is patched you could sprinkle a few embroideries around the quilt to disguise it.

Look at these posts. The first one shows Up North's problem with points that didn't match. The second one shows how she hid the problem with some embroidery. I realize the problem isn't the same but it my be applicable.
