I had that trouble with my first spool of Gutermann, but fortunately I had others to try and none of them was as bad. Eventually I ran out of spools and had to go back to the "stuck" one, but this time around I was able to find the end more quickly. Don't know what made the difference.
So, yeah, you aren't alone.
