I do both. Usually I choose my own fabrics from my stash, but if there are a zillion little pieces of material I need for a pattern in specific colors, I may buy the kit. Also, sometimes I can't buy just a pattern, but have to buy the kit if I want the pattern
There are so many free patterns online that I rarely buy a pattern any more.
