Be careful using any solvent on the plastic parts. I just cleaned up a Singer 401 that had a LOT of grease everywhere and the balance wheel was full of oil - don't ask me how they did it. The machine was bought from a lady who swore she had a friend who was a sewing machine repair man. If he was he was an amateur at best. The top of the motor was full of grease and oil slinging everywhere. (I had to rebuild the motor.) I dug out as much as I could with paper towels - Qtips - brush - anything that reaches in there. The machine's stitch selector was frozen up with 3 in 1 oil - it took a solvent to get it apart but there are no plastic parts there. The grand kids were over for a while that day and used up a whole box of Q -tips digging out grease... LOL Here is their pic in case you missed it... I'm proud of them - they love digging out grease and oil. Just hide the screw drivers...
