What a great idea for a memory quilt for you! Depending on how large the blocks are and how far apart your batting needs to be quilted, what about quilting diagonally through all the solid blocks? It would show off your patches and be less labor intensive than SID around all the blocks.
This was my first thought as well. Then I was not sure this would be considered "unique" (Smile). But it is how I would do it.
