I think it depends on the return policy, and if you want cash or credit towards another purchase. Often a store will be much more flexible of a stated policy if you are going to spend the $$ in their store.
In this instance , time is not on your side... the longer you keep it the lower the chances of getting the outcome you will be happy with.
