I've seen pics of several machines with the lead around the wiring. It's there for a reason although since I don't have the machine in front of my face I can't look it over and say what.
If the plastic connector block is just cracked you could probably fix it with some super glue or epoxy if it's clean enough.
Try the pics again and we'll be better able to judge what's wrong.
