I spent a few winters in Northern England (Yorkshire and Cumbria - I *saw* Scotland from the shore of St. Bee's) and despite the fact that I'm used to much colder temps in Chicago, I found that I was far colder there than I've ever been in Chicago!! Mostly because it was always so darn damp ... the cold just seeps into your bones and stays put until about May when the sun finally comes out again!! Add to that the fact that the English just don't heat their homes the way American's do. I'm used to dressing in layers if I plan on being outside, but not when I'm sitting in someone's living room!!
That said ... I thoroughly loved Yorkshire and Cumbria in the winter.
