For the outdoorsy person I would go with something like Corn Huskers.
For the one that wont' leave a mess on fabric ... I have a hand lotion "bar" called "Quilters Friend". It comes in a lot of different scents ... but I'll warn you ... the scent is strong! They might make an unscented. It's a Soy lotion and it does not leave a stain on the fabric. I also run thread through it sometimes for hand sewing (usually binding). I bought it at a LQS and there is an e-mail listed on the bar ...
